Plaza Sotomayor
The building occupied by the Command in Chief of the Navy was declared a National Monument (1979). In neighboring buildings one finds the South American Steamship, company, the Post office, Superintendent of the Fire Department, Railway station, Customs, Maritime Captainship, all in the old district of the city. At its center the magnificent Monument to the Naval Battle of Iquique heroes, inaugurated on May 21, 1886.
In its crypt are the remains of Captain Arturo Prat and heroes who fought in the Pacific War (1879-1883).
The House of Representatives
The National Congress was moved to Valparaiso, thus turning the city into Legislative Capital, March 11, 1990. Located in the old Barrio El Almendral, its modern structure contrasts dramatically with the surrounding old fashioned buildings.
Senators and Deputies develop and pass laws for the benefit of the country's development. Located close to Plaza O'Higgins, where every Sunday people visit the Antiques Fair "La Merced ', where you can find collector items, such as books, stamps and coins.
New year in Valparaiso
Every 31st of December, the city of Valparaiso welcomes the new Year with a magnificent display of fireworks which light up the bay ,which can be seen from the hills of Valparaiso. Around 1,000,000 people are located in different Viewpoints to be part of this great festival.
Hills of Valparaiso
The 45 hills of Valparaiso concentrate the main city attractions. The unusual style of its colorful houses, tailored to the topography of steep terrain with steep stairs, narrow streets and steep ravines forming a colorful amphitheater facing the sea. Attracted by the commercial boom that the port had in 1880, different immigrant communities, made of Valparaiso their second home being the English and German the most important.
